NYSUT Disaster Relief and Scholarship Fund

storm warning

The devastation and loss resulting from Hurricane Irene reminds us of one of the tenets of organized labor: We must look out for one another.

With that in mind, NYSUT members, their friends, family and supporters are strongly encouraged to give generously to the union’s Disaster Relief Fund.  NYSUT members have a long history of coming through for others in times of need, and Hurricane Irene caused a great deal of need in New York state.

Thank you for your generosity.

How to give and get help

If you haven't contacted the Federal Emergency Management Agency yet, try calling (800) 621-3362 or if you are able to access the Internet, go to www.disasterassistance.gov. If you are calling be aware you will need to have: your Social Security number, current and pre-disaster address, telephone number where you can be reached; insurance information, including policy numbers; total household annual income, a description of losses caused by the disaster; and the dates of the disaster.

Contact your local president or building representative to see what your union may be doing to help members in need.

If you are in 12 counties of the Greater Capital Region consider calling 2-1-1 to be connected whether you need help or have something to give. 2-1-1 is confidential call; maintains the integrity of the 9-1-1 system, saving that vital community resource for life and death emergencies; and coordinates over 1,000 non-profit organizations plus many government agencies.

Donations to NYSUT's Disaster Relief Fund are urgently needed to provide direct assistance to members in need after the devasting floods. You can make a donation or download the application for assistance here at nysut.org, or contact your local president or regional office.
