The 2011-2014 School-Related Professionals Advisory Committee

NYSUT's SRP Advisory Committee was constituted to advise NYSUT of issues and items important to school-related professionals and to aid NYSUT by making recommendations as to how these concerns may be satisfied.


Fact Sheet: 12-20: Certification Requirements for Teaching Assistants

In February 2004, the NYS Education Department implemented new regulations governing the certification of Teaching Assistants in NYS to reflect the policy initiatives of the Board of Regents. These policy initiatives increased the preparation requirements for teaching assistants and created a career ladder for teaching assistants.

The new federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, has generated a great deal of confusion and misinformation regarding the qualifications of paraprofessionals.

Through intense discussions with the State Education Department, NYSUT was able to get new interpretations regarding how paraprofessionals in New York would qualify under NCLB.
