Defensive Driving Program

Sponsored through the National Safety Council, this 6-hour multimedia presentation reviews defensive driving techniques. No formal examinations are given. Completing the course yields a 10% reduction in the base rate of principal operator’s auto liability and collision insurance premiums each year for 3 years, and a reduction of up to 4 points on one’s driving record.

How to Schedule

  • Pick a date or dates. The course can be conducted on one day, usually a Saturday, for 6 hours, or it can be split and conducted on 2 weekdays in the afternoon or evening. It is best to have multiple dates in mind to accommodate the instructor’s schedule.
  • Contact Member Benefits at 800-626-8101 with your schedule preferences. Arrangements will be made for an instructor to teach the course. The instructor will be given your name and phone number(s) to confirm the program with you.
  • Arrange for a location, usually a classroom. Make arrangements for a television, a VCR, an overhead projector and a screen.
  • Send out an announcement for the program. Include a response sheet so that the members can indicate the number of immediate family members attending. (NYSUT Member Benefits Trust can provide samples of each.) Ask that payment be included with registrations to hold space in the class.
  • Each class can hold a maximum of 40 participants; the minimum is 25.

Cost

The course fee for NYSUT members and their families is $30 per person.
