The United States City Average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July 2008 was 219.964 - representing an increase of 5.6 percent over the index for July 2007. This is the largest increase since July 1982 - see chart on page 4.

The Northeast Area Consumer Price Index for July 2008 was 234.545 - representing an increase of 5.7 percent over the index for July 2007.

The New York-Northern New Jersey Area Consumer Price Index for July 2008 was 240.273 - representing an increase of 5.1 percent over the index for July 2007.

The August CPI will be available September 16, 2008.

Future projections of the CPI by businesses and economic organizations are found on page 3. CPI increases are projected at 4.4 percent for 2008 and 2.9 percent in 2009.
