All Urban Consumers

The United States City Average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for May 2009 was 213.856 —representing a change of -1.3 percent over the index for May 2008. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that this is the largest decline since 1950 and is due mainly to a 27.3% decline in the energy index.

The Northeast Area Consumer Price Index for May 2009 was 228.136 – representing a change of -0.8 percent over the index for May 2008.

The New York-Northern New Jersey Area Consumer Price Index for May 2009 was 235.975 — representing a change of -0.1 percent over the index for May 2008.

The June CPI will be available July 15, 2009.

Future projections of the CPI by businesses and economic organizations are found on page 3. CPI increases are projected at -0.6 percent for 2009 and 1.8 percent in 2010.
