The United States City Average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for May 2006 was 202.5 — representing an increase of 4.2 percent over the index for May 2005 .
The New York-Northern New Jersey Area Consumer Price Index for
May 2006was 221.6 — representing an increase of 4.8 percent over the index for May 2005. With the exception of September 2005 when the year-to-year CPI increase for this region was also 4.8%, the May 2006 increase is the largest increase since July 1991.
The June CPI will be available July 19, 2006.
Future projections of the CPI by businesses and economic organizations are found on page 3. CPI increases are projected at 3.1percent for 2006 and 2.5 percent in 2007.
