Public education is under increasing attack. These attacks come in many different ways. They include but are not limited to private school vouchers, tax credits and tax deductions for non-public school expenses, and privatization of public school services. These attacks are eroding support for public schools. This information bulletin reviews these threats to public education.

Public school supporters fight and beat back these attacks because they hold public schools to a special place. Public education is the foundation of our democracy. Our public schools strive to offer a quality education to all children regardless of race, color, creed or financial background. This democratization of our schools has made us one people with a set of constitutional rights that are the envy of the world. Our public schools have produced generations of leaders, workers, inventors and citizens who have made our nation into the greatest nation in the world. With all the accomplishments of public education, there are still improvements to be made — improvements that are already underway.

It is hard to think of another public or private service that is as subject to public review, offers as much information about itself, and is constantly trying to improve as much as public education. This openness is the great strength of public education. On the other hand, those who are attacking public education seek to tear it down rather than joining with those who work to renew and strengthen this great American institution. This information bulletin seeks to shed light on these attacks. A greater knowledge of the attacks will help public education supporters to be armed and strengthened for the fight now and in the years ahead.
