Domestic Partner Benefits

Voting delegates at the 2006 NYSUT Representative Assembly adopted a resolution calling on NYSUT to conduct research and to provide local leaders with information on domestic partner benefits.

Domestic partner benefits are fringe benefits, such as health insurance coverage, family sick leave, and bereavement leave that are provided to employees with a domestic partner. Including these benefits in a union contract assures that all union members and their families are provided with the same protections and economic benefits. While some employers may be reluctant to offer domestic partner benefits, these benefits are really a matter of economic and social justice.

This Information Bulletin details the:

  • Increasing number of domestic partner households;

  • States, school districts, and private employers that offer domestic partner benefits;

  • Cost of offering such benefits;

  • Tax implications;

  • Implementation of domestic partner benefits; and

  • AFL-CIO's "Seven Easy Steps for Adding Domestic Partner Benefits to Your Union Contract."
