New York expands COBRA insurance to 36 months

According to Chapter 226 of the Laws of New York State 2009, if federal COBRA is exhausted under an insured group plan, then qualified beneficiaries can extend coverage under NYS "mini COBRA" for an additional 18 months following a loss of coverage due to termination of employment or a reduction of hours. There is no cost to the employer. The individual must pay the full premium capped at 102% of the group rated.
This law became effective on July 1, 2009, and applies to health insurance contracts issued, renewed, modified, altered or amended after this date.
