Overtime Protection and a Day of Rest for Farmworkers

As your constituent, I am writing to ask for support of A.11425-a, which provides both a day of rest and overtime protections to NYS farmworkers. For too many years, hard-working farmworkers have been denied the same labor protections that all other NYS laborers enjoy. I find this practice to be unfair and discriminatory. Allowing unlimited hours of work-for days on end-to be compensated at a flat "straight-time" rate invites excesses that in some cases border on abuse.
For decades, New York State has generously supported the agricultural industry with tax breaks and copious subsidies, without insisting that it comply with the same labor laws by which other New York industries abide. The unfortunate reality that farmworkers are excluded from basic protections is alarming, but what is more disturbing is that New York helps finance their exploitation by providing more direct subsidies to agriculture than to any other industry. We need to give some consideration to the people performing the arduous and often, thankless, labor that feeds New York State citizens. It is time to deliver for farmworkers by enacting legislation that would guarantee them the same rights and respect as workers in other New York industries.
Please do all that you can to work towards passage of A.11425-a (Wright).
