As a politically active member of the New York State United Teachers, I am writing to request your continued opposition to the enactment of a "Tier V" retirement plan or any other proposal that reduces the base-line retirement benefits of future public sector workers. We share the position of our affiliate, the New York State AFL-CIO that affirms the right of all unions to collectively bargain the terms and conditions of employment on behalf of their members. NYSUT strongly opposes, however, having any benefit changes such as the proposed retirement reductions unilaterally imposed upon our members.
If enacted, the current proposal would require greater contributions from middle class families over a long period of time - essentially a pay reduction - in exchange for diminished retirement eligibility and inferior retirement benefits. These benefit reductions would not generate a savings for public employers or taxpayers in the near term and would not help the state or school districts solve their budget problems.
In fact, even long term savings from Tier V will not occur for at least 10 years and after that there is widespread disagreement about how much savings can actually be achieved.
An equally important concern is that if the current proposal is enacted, it would severely hamper the ability of schools to attract and retain quality educators and it would directly impair the ability of schools to deliver quality educational services to our children and our communities in the future.
NYSUT members have worked with you on many important issues over the years, now, we ask you to stand with us in rejecting the Tier V proposal so that our public schools and universities can continue to attract and retain the quality educators and other school-related professionals necessary to close the achievement gap and move our state forward to meet the needs of a changing economy.
I strongly urge you to reject this legislation and stand up for future middle class public servants who deserve the right to retire in dignity and security after a career in public service.
Thank you for your consideration and support on this important issue.
Sincerely,
Your Name Here
