Touro College/NYSUT Student in the Graduate program of Special and Elementary Education

"In taking Cathy Becker's Introduction to Special Education class, I learned about the various laws and policies that are in favor of individuals with disabilities. One important lesson I learned from this class is that teachers need to collaborate well with one another to provide the best instruction possible for students.Cathy Becker educated us on various teaching styles and hands-on activities that promote growth in the classroom both socially and academically. I feel confident bringing everything I learned from the instructor, the lessons, activities, and readings to my classroom."

Physical Education Teacher - Oceanside Boardman Elementary School

"As a teacher of physical education I have seen an increase in the number of inclusion classes ... When I registered for this class I was hoping to be able to acquire more information to help me meet the challenges of teaching in the inclusion setting. I haven't been disappointed ... the course work seemed to back up the research I did ... The students in class with me were very upbeat, intelligent, and like me seemed very eager to learn and contribute. It was nice to see a physical education teacher, social worker, reading teacher, and special education teacher working so well with each other."

"Last fall I took a class through NYSUT ELT and Long Island University, Classroom Management, taught by David Lowrey at Lockport High School. As I am a kindergarten teacher, it is often difficult for instructors to make the curriculum relevant for my classroom. Not so with this course and this teacher. This is my 16th year teaching and I was looking for some new ideas to help energize my classroom and deal with the current realities of fitting so much curriculum into so little time. David's style of teaching is personal. He makes it his mission to make sure everyone in the class is getting what he or she needs out of the class."
