Bilingual Education Technical Assistance Centers (BETACs - listed below) are located throughout New York state and are set up to provide free technical assistance and resources for designing, implementing and enhancing educational services for limited English proficient/English language learners (LEP/ELLs) for districts in each region. BETACs are funded by the NYS Education Department Office of Bilingual/ESL Education and Foreign Language Studies.

BETACs provide a variety of services, including:

•Providing technical assistance on policies and regulations, educational resources,and implementation of higher learning standards related to ELLs.

•Assisting parent and community outreach programs and activities that support and enable ELLs to be successful in school.

•Providing professional development opportunities that enhance the knowledge and skills of all educators who impact the learning of ELLs. For example, your regional BETAC can organize workshops, conferences, and other training opportunities to assist you with meeting the needs of ELL students you work with.

There are also three statewide language specific BETACs: the Asian Languages "ALBETAC" that addresses the needs of the many Asian languages; the Spanish BETAC; and the Haitian "HABETAC." Although they are located in New York City, the language specific BETACs provide resources, and professional development opportunities for educators and parents throughout New York state.
