NYSUT's 'Ending the Gap' conference kicks off Oct. 25

NYSUT's "Every Child Counts: Ending the Gap" symposium Oct. 25-27 featuring nationally known researchers, key state policy-makers and other advocates for change.

Participants will discuss what schools can and cannot do to narrow the achievement gap. "Too many of New York's students - predominantly children of color - are being left behind with low test scores, high dropout rates and limited opportunities for success," said NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi. "We want to discuss what it takes to truly leave no child behind and create conditions that will raise student achievement."

The symposium at the Desmond Hotel in Albany will feature informative and inspirational speakers.

Donna BrazileThe opening keynote will be delivered by Donna Brazile, political strategist and a regular commentator on CNN. Other speakers and panelists include:

  • Education Trust Director Kati Haycock;
  • Ronald Ferguson of Harvard University;
  • Manuel Rivera, deputy secretary for Education for New York state;
  • David F. Shaffer, Public Policy Institute;
  • Randi Weingarten, president of the United Federation of Teachers;
  • James Crawford, president of the Institute for Language and Education Policy;
  • Richard Rothstein of Columbia University; and
  • Pedro Noguera of New York University's Steinhardt School of Education.

The symposium will include sessions for deeper discussion on specialized topics, including Career and Technical Education.
