Hot or not?
While everyone generally agrees on the need to wash hands to reduce the spread of the H1N1 flu virus, there is some debate over how hot the water needs to be.
The Food and Drug Administration says hot water comfortable enough for washing hands is not hot enough to kill bacteria, but is more effective than cold water because it removes oils that can harbor bacteria.
But the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine reports that water temperature had "no effect on transient or resident bacterial reduction" in subjects taking part in a 2005 study.
Scientists, in fact, noted that hot water might increase the "irritant capacity" of some soaps, causing contact dermatitis.

Disability awareness
October's end brings a close to National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a special national observance to recognize and celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities.
Fair access to employment is a fundamental right that includes the 54 million people in the United States living with disabilities.
This is a time to recommit to implementing effective policies and practices that increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
