Hegge receives Feldman leadership grant

Marianne Hegge is "walking in the footsteps" of former AFT President Sandy Feldman. And the late union pioneer's husband, Arthur Barnes, thinks she'll do just fine.
"We expect great things from you," Barnes said in presenting Hegge with the inaugural Sandy Feldman Leadership Grant.
Hegge teaches high school English and is a member of the Western Sullivan United Teachers and SRPs. Her dedication to promoting the union and getting members involved mirrors the way Feldman embraced her charge as a union leader and activist.
The Sandy Feldman Leadership Grant, a $2,000 award to be given annually, honors an emerging woman leader who is dedicated to the principles Feldman exemplified: unionism, leadership and commitment to human and civil rights. The grant was established thanks to Barnes' generous $25,000 gift.
Hegge serves as secretary of her local's benefit trust and scholarship committee. She is also chair of the local union's new-member committee.
"This is a very special night in my life. To see that you approved this initiative fills my heart with gratitude," Barnes said. "Marianne Hegge is walking in the same footsteps of Sandy and her selection is most appropriate."

Marianne Hegge may only be in her eighth year of teaching, but she has already made a tremendous impact for the Western Sullivan United Teachers and School-Related Professionals.
