Options available for National Board retake candidates

On National Board Certification Day, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards publicly released the names of the new National Board Certified Teachers in New York state and across the nation.

The process to achieve National Board Certification takes between one and three years. Candidates who do not achieve National Board Certification on the first attempt often find success by retaking certain entries and exercises.

In New York state, the Albert Shanker Grant application will waive the fees for 2 retakes ($350/retake). If the retake candidate is from a school in which 51 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, additional funding is available for retakes through the NBPTS Targeted High Needs Initiative (THNI) grant.

Candidates may email New York's THNI Grant coordinator, Annette Romano, aromano12@nycap.rr.com , with their name, school, candidate identification number, and number of retake entries by December 31, 2008.
