Newsday: East Islip president calls for teacher input on NCLB

"Children and their schools are so much more than test scores," says East Islip Teachers Association president Nancy Close in a recent opinion piece in Newsday.

"Teachers in East Islip and elsewhere on Long Island, of course, know that. There is so much about student learning - and what happens in successful schools - that can't possibly be accurately or objectively measured by standardized tests.

"Yet, it appears the House Education and Labor Committee remains to be convinced. The committee's new draft language containing proposed changes to No Child Left Behind continues the law's unwise focus on high-stakes testing, punishments and labeling of schools."
