About the Handbook

handbook for laid-off school employeesLosing one's job can be extremely traumatic. It is crucial that the proper support systems be in place to assist you through this difficult transition. NYSUT has designed the Handbook for Laid-Off School Employees specifically for this purpose - to help you to survive these difficult times on the best possible terms. (NOTE: The handbook does not include information for New York City school employees. You may contact the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) at 212-777-7500. or visit www.uft.org.)

The Handbook for Laid-Off School Employees contains information that will aid you in maintaining and protecting your benefits, applying for unemployment insurance, maintaining your union membership, protecting your seniority rights and seeking employment.

Remember, no matter how difficult your circumstances may be, the union is there to help. Your local union representative is available to answer your questions, provide the necessary information, and help ensure that your rights are protected.

The Handbook includes information on the following:

  • Introduction/Where to Go for Help
  • Financial Assistance for the Laid-Off Employee
  • Unemployment Insurance
  • Your Right to Recall to Future Vacancies
  • Continuing Your Local and NYSUT/AFT/NEA Membership

Where to Go for Help

Once you have been notified that you have been laid off, you should contact your local union representative. He/she will be able to advise you on what to do next.

A rule of thumb is never sign anything. If your principal or supervisor requests that you sign a statement regarding your layoff, do not do so without checking first with the union.

If you have questions regarding your seniority and recall rights, contact your local union for assistance.

Do not be afraid to ask for help. You may feel afraid, angry and depressed when you are out of work. A first step is to recognize that these feelings are natural and that you are not alone. In addition to the support NYSUT can provide, don't hesitate to depend upon family and friends to get you through this difficult period.
