Rebecca Beagle

United Federation of Teachers member Rebecca "Rebbe" Beagle died recently at the age of 100. She had retired to California with her husband, Si, many years ago.

Rebbe was an elementary school teacher, chapter leader and delegate to UFT's Delegate Assembly.

A dedicated unionist, Rebbe participated in all of the UFT's strikes, rallies and demonstrations over the years.

Rebbe was predeceased by her husband and is survived by two sons and their families.


Benjamin Canale

Fulton Teachers Association member Benjamin Canale died Jan. 23.

A WWII veteran, Benjamin was a graduate of Oswego High and Oswego Teachers College. He retired from Fulton Junior High, where he served as a social studies teacher for 34 years.

Benjamin is survived by his wife, Francine; stepchildren Terri (Rod) and Barney (Tina); his sister, Mary (William); and his brother, John (Angeline). He was predeceased by his brothers, Michael and John.

Paul Claudato

Paul Claudato, a UFT member, teacher and librarian, died March 27. Paul began his education career in 1959 at Long Island City High in Queens. He retired in 1991.

He was a multitalented man who enjoyed travel and taught courses at the UFT/WF Retiree Learning Centers. He guided trips around New York City and his courses in art and history were well attended.


Dorothea Hayes

Dorothea Hayes, a UFT member who taught in New York City public schools for 27 years, died Feb. 10.

She was a product of Jamaica, Queens, public schools and received her undergraduate degree from Hunter College. Dorothea achieved high honors and was awarded a master's degree in sociology from New York University. She taught piano privately, traveled extensively, and was always willing to assist family and friends.

Dorothea is survived by her husband, John; two stepchildren; three sisters; nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.


Deborah Kiely-Dilworth

Deborah "Deb" Kiely-Dilworth, a member and vice president of the Greenburgh 11 Federation of Teachers, died March 28 at age 63. Deb was a dedicated special education teacher as well as a staunch union activist. Before coming to Greenburgh 11, she was a Catholic school teacher for many years.

Deb was an avid gardener and enjoyed the beaches of Cape Cod.

She is survived by her husband Tom, a past president of the Greenburgh 11 FT; her step-children; and many family members. She will be remembered for her strength and kindness to all.


Doreen Klau

UFT member Doreen Klau died Jan. 28; she was 58.

Doreen worked for 30 years as a speech teacher and served as a union representative. She last worked at the Americas School of Heroes, MS 137.

A Brooklyn College graduate, Doreen received two master's degrees from C.W. Post. Teaching and helping children gave Doreen a sense of purpose. She enjoyed her school family including many colleagues who were also close friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah, who will always love and miss her.


Claire Zanger Schwartz

Claire Zanger Schwartz, a member of the UFT, died Dec. 7.

Claire was a retired substitute teacher at Springfield Gardens High. An enthusiastic teacher who was sought after to fill in when needed, Claire was a business major and class president at City College where she met her future husband, Morton.

Claire is survived by her husband; children Howard (Debbie), Bruce ( Nancy) and Mara (Bill); and grandchildren Erica, Michael (Krista), Sam, Liz, Justine, Danny, Ben and Emily.


Anita Winograd

UFT member Anita Winograd died March 28.

Anita taught English as a second language for 35 years at PS 48 in District 8 in the Bronx. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Sidney; her sons, Jeffrey and Steven and their wives; and grandchildren Molly, Deborah and Bradley.
