Joseph McLaughlin and Paul Farfaglia.

RA delegates unanimously endorsed Paul Farfaglia of the Jordan-Elbridge Teachers Association in his bid for election this fall to be one of three teacher-members on the board of the New York State Teachers' Retirement System.

Farfaglia, a teacher since 1982, is a middle-level science teacher. He has served as president of the Onondaga County local union since 1989 and is an at-large member of the NYSUT Board of Directors.

NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan Lubin said Farfaglia was selected by a search committee and recommended by both the NYSUT Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Lubin noted Farfaglia, a longtime member of NYSUT's Pension Committee and Tier 4, is committed to tier equity for younger members.

The other active teacher-members of the TRS board are Sheila Salenger of the Wappingers Congress of Teachers and Michael Corn of the New Hartford TA.

Farfaglia is running for the seat being vacated by Joseph McLaughlin of the Harrison Association of Teachers, whose term ends in January. The TRS election will be in November.

Farfaglia praised McLaughlin for 18 years of dedicated service to the board and his work as an advocate for members. "He's brought teacher-leader representation on the board to a great place," Farfaglia said.
