For Cutler, field trip marks the end of a tradition

Since 1992, middle school teacher Lee Cutler has been taking his Nanuet students to Salem, Mass., to learn about actual witch hunts and hangings after they've read Arthur Miller's play The Crucible.
Cutler said the social justice lesson students learn is that "no one was there for the weak."
In April, Cutler was elected NYSUT secretary-treasurer, so last month's field trip was the final one for the veteran educator.
Here, Cutler and some of the group check out the waterfront in Salem and gather for a tour of The House of Seven Gables, where they learned more about author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Photos by Andrew Watson.
