Survey says, Fair Trade now

NYSUT members across the state say they want to increase awareness about Fair Trade.

The members made their feelings known in answers to a recent survey distributed by the union's Fair Trade Task Force. "The response," said chairwoman Nancy Close, "was overwhelming."

Close said members recommended raising awareness about Fair Trade a number of ways, including through curriculum, fundraising and relationships with international groups.

During NYSUT's 2008 Representative Assembly in April, delegates passed a resolution calling on the union to negotiate with facilities hosting NYSUT events to serve only Fair Trade products during events. The union has also awarded certificates of recognition to more than 60 NYSUT locals for their Fair Trade work. (For a complete list of those recognized, go to www.nysut.org and click on the "Awards and Honors" link at the top left side of the home page.)

"There's been a cry from NYSUT members to widen our social justice agenda, and Fair Trade is an easy way to do that," said Close of the East Islip Teachers Association. "But, we also want to expand that (agenda) in the future."
