Students 'vote' kids' books into the White House library

On election day 2008, students, faculty and staff at the Milton Terrace South Elementary School in Ballston Spa (Saratoga County) voted on what childrens books should be in the White House Library. The election, led by librarian Susan Penney, followed weeks of campaigning for favorite books. Students had discovered during an earlier research project that there were no children's books in the White House Library.

The winners: "The Napping House" by Audrey Wood; "Alphabet Rescue" by Audrey and Bruce Wood; "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg, ""Yoko's World of Kindness" by Rosemary Wells; "Duck for President" by Doreen Cronin; "Officer Buckle and Gloria" by Peggy Rothmann; "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney; "The Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 1" by Holly Black and Tom DiTerlizzi; "Marley, A Dog Like No Other," by John Grogan; "The Witches" by Roald Dahl; "Because of Winn Dixie" and "Tale of Despereaux" both by Kate DiCamillo; "Stella Luna" by Janell Cannon; and "Click Clack Moo" by Doreen Cronin.

All of the winning books were donated by teachers and parents and sent to the office of Congressional Representative Kirsten Gillibrand to be delivered to the White House.
