UUP welcomes new SUNY chancellor
United University Professions is looking forward to a cooperative relationship with the new chancellor of the State University of New York, at what is arguably the most difficult time in SUNY's 60-year history.
The SUNY Board of Trustees recently announced the appointment of Nancy Zimpher, president of the University of Cincinnati since 2003.
"Dr. Nancy Zimpher is credited with guiding the University of Cincinnati through some tough financial times. She will need to draw upon those same skills to lead the State University," said UUP President Phil Smith.
Based on her resume, Smith said, the union is optimistic Zimpher will bring "the steady leadership that is so vital to SUNY, as it faces the serious financial challenges caused by the state budget cutbacks."
Zimpher's career has focused on teacher education and college administration. At Cincinnati, she oversaw the development of a new strategic plan that addressed admission standards, enrollment and diversity.
She replaces John Ryan, who resigned in 2007 for a new job.
