Health Briefs: Taking on obesity

Amnesty ends June 12

The state Department of Civil Service is undertaking a project to verify the eligibility of every dependent covered by the New York State Health Insurance Program.

All enrollees (in-service and retired) with family Empire Plan coverage or state workers enrolled in an HMO through NYSHIP must provide proof that each of their dependents is eligible for coverage. Under a special amnesty period that ends June 12, enrollees can remove ineligible dependents without penalty.

For details, go to www.cs.state.ny.us/nyshipeligibilityproject/index.cfm or call 888-358-2196.

Taking on obesity

Get Healthy New York is a school wellness program to increase awareness about childhood obesity. It works with students in grades 6-8 in New York City schools on self-control, self-management, making positive decisions and becoming aware of outside influences on health-related behaviors.

For more information, go to www.gethealthyharlem.org or www.urbantech.org.

AFT health conference

The theme for this year's American Federation of Teachers health care conference is "Fight for America's Future."

The conference will be held June 11-14 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C.

Go to www.aft.org for more information.

Health/safety help

The United Federation of Teachers, NYSUT's affiliate in New York City schools, is keeping members informed about environmental health and safety issues through a Web page created by its own safety and health department.

School staff can get help with concerns about environmental issues, including mold, asbestos, construction and renovation activities, lead, communicable diseases and indoor air quality.
