Rare maps reveal details of Hudson's voyages to New York
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival in New York, rare maps of his historic voyages, photos and 3-D models of his ships are available at www.henryhudson400.com.
The maps, from the National Archives of the Netherlands, reveal the story of 17th-century exploration and history of the early Dutch settlement of New York, along with the effects of climate change in the area and the rising sea levels for coastal cities in the 21st century.
The aim of the sponsors, Google Maps and the nonprofit Henry Hudson 400, is to make historical connections.
The maps can be used as a teaching tool.
The actual documents will be part of an exhibition on early New York history, opening Sept. 13 at Manhattan's South Street Seaport Museum.
