Honors

Maggie Bouck, president of Cherry Valley-Springfield Teachers Association; Clarissa Bushman, United Federation of Teachers; and Ivor Parsons, Great Neck TA, have been named Recipients of the Presidential Scholars Program's Teacher Recognition Award by the U.S. Department of Education. Recipients will be honored June 21 in Washington, D.C.

Karl Grossman, United University Professions, has received the Environmental Stewardship Award of the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club. A professor of journalism at SUNY Old Westbury, he is author of six books and hosts the TV program Enviro Close-Up, which airs nationally.

Michael Boloker, Smithtown Teachers Association (retired), has published Finding Dean Moriarty. A tribute to Jack Kerouac's On the Road, it's based on a journal Boloker kept on a trip he took in the summer of 1958 from Brooklyn to Mexico City to emulate the experiences of his fictional heroes from that novel. Ellen Levitt, United Federation of Teachers, has published The Lost Synagogues of Brooklyn, a photographic essay of former Jewish houses of worship. Some of the photos were part of a Levitt exhibit at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Available at www.avotanyu.com.

Barbara Linsley, Mount Markham TA, has written Dreams on the Oregon Trail, which traces the trips of two fictional heroines traveling the trail — one in 1848, the other in the present day. Available at bookstores and www.barbaralinsley.com.

Richard Piccirilli, Penfield Education Association, has published Mastering Math Facts: Addition & Subtraction for Grades 1-3 and Mastering Math Facts: Multiplication and Division for Grades 3-6, part of Scholastic Teaching Resources' Best Practices in Action Series.
