Local gets high marks for bus safety

Bus drivers get a lot of attention in the media when something goes wrong. The Maine-Endwell Transportation Association also gets attention — and respect — for its proactive approach to school bus safety and its commitment to community service.

"We are dedicated to educating drivers, kids and parents, too, about ensuring a safe ride to and from school and following safe bus rules," said Joanne Westermann, an 11-year veteran bus driver and president of the Broome County local union.

"That includes not distracting the driver and knowing what to do if something should happen to a driver," said Dave Alexander, an organizer of the local's safety program.

META has an annual ice cream social to raise money for worthwhile projects. Last fall, under the supervision of Jamie Scribner and Nancy Lamb, donations were made to the PTA organizations of both elementary schools in the district and victims of June floods in the region.

The ice cream social is also an occasion for a SAFE bus (short for Student, Accident, Fire, Evacuation). Students and parents can climb aboard the bus and learn how to exit through an emergency window and roof hatch in the event of an accident.

META's community outreach includes filling a "chow bus" with bags of groceries for the hungry. This year's CHOW project benefits local churches, according to Westermann.

The local also started the "Golden Hub Award," presented to a driver who contributes to bus safety — the first two awards went to Westermann and Floyd Ammerman.

"It is a tremendous responsibility, overwhelming at times, yet at the same time an awesome privilege and honor to be part of an important role in educating our children," Westermann wrote in META's newsletter.
