Helping those who help the neediest in Suffolk County
Some 200 workers who assist Long Island's neediest residents with basic life skills at the United Cerebral Palsy Center of Suffolk County picketed the facility earlier this month.
The workers - teachers, teachers' aides, therapists, nurses and other key staff members who help the center's clients live more dignified lives - were joined by some parents of the center's clients and NYSUT local leaders.
"The dedicated, professional staff at UCP takes care of the basic needs of some of our region's most needy residents, yet the center is offering paltry pay raises that are less than inflation," said Nancy Purdy, president of the United Center Employees Association. "Our message to the center is: UCP workers deserve a fair raise, and a contract that recognizes the challenges and demands of their difficult jobs."
The workers picketed the UCP Center's annual gala and dinner in October.
Workers at the UCP Center have been without a fair agreement since May 30. Despite 14 negotiating sessions, the two sides have been unable to reach agreement because the center's management wants to hold pay raises to less than inflation, Purdy said.
