After four difficult years, the Smithtown Security Guards, led by Anthony Petrucci, have their first-ever contract. The deal, which runs through 2009, was reached with minimal conflict once a new superintendent took over in the district, Petrucci said.

"I have an awesome relationship with the administration now," said Petrucci, whose approximately 70 members consist of several former New York City police officers and firefighters. "The members are thrilled with the contract and they have been extremely patient throughout this ordeal."

Petrucci's union has been affiliated with NYSUT since 2004; he praised NYSUT and labor relations specialist Jonathan Rubin for their support as the union endured the impasse and plenty of frustration under the former administration. He also credited fellow unionists, including the Smithtown Teachers Association, led by Richard Forzano, for speaking up on the security guards' behalf at school board meetings.

"Being part of NYSUT has been above and beyond anything we had expected," Petrucci said.
