Health Briefs: Solidarity at the Super Bowl

Solidarity at the Super Bowl

While the New York Giants were ending an unbeaten season for the New England Patriots in early February, health care workers of the Service Employees International Union were taking advantage of Boston's Super Bowl radio audience by airing commercials appealing for fair and free union elections for Boston hospital workers.

The union, 1199 SEIU, is a Patriots sponsor on WBCN, the CBS radio affiliate in Boston.

The union was exclusive sponsor of injury reports and updates throughout the Super Bowl.

Alliance unveils guide to science scholarships

The National Alliance for Hispanic Health has released a 38-page guide to scholarships and educational opportunities for students interested in the sciences.

The publication of the guide follows an alliance survey that found education and science career opportunities an overwhelming priority among Latino parents.

You can check out the guide at http://www.hispanichealth.org/.

The poll found that 82 percent of Latinos think the United States' commitment to health research should be higher. That compares with 51 percent of the general population.

The information-packed Web site also contains a video profile of Dr. Antonia Novello, the nation's first Latino surgeon general.

Novello also served as New York state health commissioner in the critical period after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
