Top SRP credits union mentoring for success

Mary Jo Roberge
School-Related Professional of the Year Mary Jo Roberge, who began her career without knowing "a NYSUT from an AFT," said good mentoring was behind her evolution into a union leader and activist.
In her Friday address to RA delegates, Roberge, a special ed teaching assistant and member of the North Syracuse EA, thanked several NYSUT SRP leaders, saying "they explained that a leader needs to be strong, passionate about issues and seen as one who not only listens, but also acts."
Roberge, who received a standing ovation from delegates, has participated in various SRP committees for NYSUT and one of its national affiliates, the American Federation of Teachers, in addition to being active in professional development issues.
Roberge was nominated for the award by NSEA President and NYSUT Board member Sylvia Matousek, who praised Roberge for permitting "the people within her unit to elevate themselves professionally."
Roberge had the full support of her NSEA colleagues in attendance. NSEA's delegates to the RA have been wearing pins with Roberge's photo, celebrating her award.
In fact, during an address to the Local & Retiree Council Presidents Conference prior to the RA, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport, proudly wore one of the pins.
Roberge said one of the great honors of winning the award is that she gets to represent the thousands of capable and talented SRPs throughout the state.
"I know that there are many SRPs across the state who work hard for their members and who are very deserving of this award," she said to applause. "I am proud to represent the School-Related Professionals."
