Stock up on fair trade coffee, snacks

Dawn Sherwood of the Hempstead TA.
Time for a coffee break? Stop by the New York State Labor-Religion Coalition booth in America's Hall I to stock up on a mouthwatering array of fairly traded coffee and chocolate. Back by popular demand this year is NYSUT blend coffee. NYSUT's decaf and regular blends feature beans harvested by co-op members in Nicaragua and members of the Pangoa Cooperative in Peru.
The coalition will be selling regular, decaf, ground and whole-bean coffee sized to gift (4.5 oz) or share (12 oz). Other fair trade treats available include almonds, cranberries, pecans and tea.
Buying fair trade ensures that growers receive a fair price for their goods and that no child or slave labor is used in the growing or production of the products, a policy the statewide union is committed to supporting.
The coalition is also supporting the launch of a new fair trade curriculum by the statewide union's subject area committees on social studies and art. If you stop by their booth, also located in America's Hall I, you'll receive a coupon for $1 off an item at the Labor-Religion Coalition display. The coupons will only be honored during NYSUT's Services and Benefits on Display hours: Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday, 8 to 10:15 a.m.
Stock up during the convention or visit http://www.labor-religion.com/ for information on purchasing delicious fair trade products online. Shop early and often!
