Union communicators were honored Thursday in the annual NYSUT Journalism Awards competition. This year, 354 entries competed for prizes.
The Ted Bleecker award, "The Best of the Best" was awarded to The Hatchet, published by the Deposit TA and edited by Eileen Plunkett. The DTA is led by Tredwell Burch.
The small local also picked up first-place awards in its class for best feature story and new members' issues, as well as a pair of merit awards.
Two locals won Solidarity Awards. The Scribe of Amityville TA, led by President Carolyn Dodd, won for editor Sue Amato, who also took home a merit award and honorable mentions.
The Word, published by the FA of Suffolk Community College, won for editor Kevin Peterman and co-editor Joyce Gabriele. NYSUT Board member Ellen Schuler Mauk leads the local. The Word also took home first-place awards in several categories and an award of merit for best Web site.
NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi told award winners there is little going on "that doesn't make journalism central to what we do as NYSUT."
