Smith: Reaching out to students, educators

State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith

Where can kids learn about different careers in one quick stop on the Internet?

By signing on to the New York State Labor Department's "Career Zone" Web site (http://www.nycareerzone.org/), one of several innovative approaches the department is using to make sure the state's work force is well prepared.

M. Patricia Smith, the state labor commissioner, came to the RA on Friday armed with a portfolio of ideas to share with the assembly. Among them: Career Zone, which explains different careers and what's involved in preparing for them, using a colorful Web site with an edgy design aimed at students.

The department is also revamping the old-fashioned but effective approach of apprenticeships as a way of helping students prepare for different careers, and is expanding its student internship programs.

"Only by working together can we be assured that our work force is adequately prepared," Smith told the delegates.
