Bridge renaming, lesson plans ensure RFK's crusade for social justice, civil rights lives on

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speaks at a Nov. 19 event renaming New York City's Triborough Bridge the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge in his father's honor. Former President Bill Clinton, Kerry Kennedy and Gov. David Paterson were among featured speakers. NYSUT was recognized at a star-studded gala that night for the union's leadership in developing lesson plans tied to RFK's social justice legacy.

Aliza Fatima, a fifth-grader at NYC's PS 131, shows the NYSUT poster she had autographed by Bill Clinton. She was at the bridge renaming ceremony in recognition of the outstanding essay she wrote on RFK.


Music teacher Roberta Feldheusen, a member of the United Federation of Teachers, and the student choir at PS 102, are greeted by NYSUT President Iannuzzi moments before the children sang at the bridge dedication ceremony in Astoria Park, Queens.


U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, Gov. David Paterson and U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer recited stirring quotes from RFK to the audience of 1,100 that included leaders from government, entertainment, philanthropy and labor.
