for National Board Certification
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent,
nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working for the following goals:
- to establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers
should know and be able to do;
- to develop and operate a national, voluntary system to assess and
certify teachers who meet these standards; and
- to advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving
student learning in American schools.
New York State United Teachers is working to encourage New York State
teachers to seek National Board certification. The union's ongoing efforts
include
- the creation of lab programs in several locations around the state
to support the efforts of groups of candidates seeking national certification;
- awareness programs sponsored by NYSUT in cooperation with New York
State Teacher Centers; and
- "NYSUT Online for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards,"
a Web resource for National Board candidates and certified
teachers.
More than 200 New York teachers are seeking national certification
this school year.
