Capital District ovarian cancer run/walk Sept. 13

Source:  New York Teacher

Caring Together will host its 8th annual Teal Ribbon Run/Walk to support cures for ovarian cancer at 9 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 13, at Albany's Washington Park. NYSUT is a sponsor of the family-friendly event, which features clowns, balloon animals, face-painting, music and refreshments. More than 40 teams are expected to participate, each representing at least one woman whose life has been affected by ovarian cancer. There are as many stories as there are teams. This year, for example, two sixth-graders started a team in honor of their Voorheesville music teacher, Mary Teresa McCormick.

At least seven teams will be dedicated to NYSUT-affiliated members:

•"Benjamin's Brigade," in honor of Allyson Benjamin, attendance supervisor at Greenville Central School.

•"Crazy Foxes," in memory of Sharon Gaffney, high school librarian at Ichabod Crane Central School.

• "Flit's Troop," in honor of Florence "Flit" McElligott, retired elementary librarian from Niskayuna.

•"Laura's Lucky Stars" in memory of Laura Kerzic, a NYSUT employee.

•"Whisper Warriors," in honor of Linda Austin, a retired biology teacher from Greenwich Central School, and other women from Greenwich.
