Deadline approaches for NYSUT Journalism Competition

Calling all newsletter editors and webmasters: get your entries ready for the NYSUT Journalism Competition, which recognizes outstanding local union publications and websites throughout the state. Winners of the competition will be honored at the second annual Journalism Conference, taking place June 4, 2011 at NYSUT headquarters in Latham.

A new category this year is Best Community Outreach Using Electronic Media. Entries will be judged on a local's best use of website and/or social media to raise awareness and to spur action around a cause or event. Two print categories were combined into one - Best Publication.

The deadline for entries is Dec. 8.

Only print entries from Sept. 1, 2009, to Aug. 31, 2010, will be considered. Entries for Best Website and Best Community Outreach Using Electronic Media must be current.

The contest's two top winners - for the Ted Bleecker "Best of the Best" and Solidarity awards - will be saluted at NYSUT's Representative Assembly, April 7-9 in New York City.

"It's important for editors to make sure their entries match the category descriptions," said Mary Fran Gleason, NYSUT United's editor-in-chief. "Entries submitted in the wrong categories risk elimination."

Entry forms are available here at nysut.org and on the NYSUT Editors Groupsite. Any member involved with their local's communications is invited to join the Groupsite, which offers lots of information and tips.
