BUFFALO, N.Y. March 22, 2010 - Educators at Buffalo United Charter School will rally Tuesday to protest the refusal of the school's board of directors to recognize their right to unionize under New York state law.

The rally will take place on Tuesday, March 23, at 4 p.m., across the street from the Buffalo United Charter School, located at 325 Manhattan Ave. in Buffalo.

Twice in the last year, 100 percent of BUCS educators signed union authorization cards in favor of forming a union. The fledgling BUCS Education Association also filed for certification with the State Public Employment Relations Board.

According to the 1998 Charter School law, charter school employees are considered public employees. The board's refusal to recognize the union violates the state's Taylor Law, which gives all public employees the right to organize.
