February is Black History Month and NYSUT is celebrating with a free poster highlighting Charlotte Forten Grimke, the first northern African-American schoolteacher to travel south to teach former slaves. She later published Life on the Sea Islands, chronicling her experiences in South Carolina.
Forten Grimke was featured in the recent PBS documentary series "Only A Teacher," which explores the role of American teachers from the 1830s to the present.Visit http://www.pbs.org/onlyateacher to learn more about Grimke's life and to find other resources for the classroom.
