Special guests at the award luncheon were NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira, who is a champion of communications, and author and labor activist Esther Cohen. Cohen talked about her work with the Workforce Development Institute and the NYS AFL-CIO in helping union members, workers and volunteers tell their stories about their roles in dealing with the devastation of Superstorm Sandy. Cohen is the author of Unseen America, a book showcasing photographs taken by working people - who are often overlooked by society - to document their lives and the world as they see it.
