Keeping children safe is the No. 1 priority for all educators.

“Keeping children safe is the No. 1 priority for all educators. As smoke and haze from wildfires in Canada blanket much of New York state, increasing the danger for those who suffer from asthma and other ailments, actions by the governor and school districts to limit outdoor activities are not just prudent, they are potentially lifesaving,” said NYSUT President Melinda Person. “These conditions can also greatly increase chances of heart attacks and other medical incidents for those who work outside such as maintenance and ground crews. We urge school district and community officials to refer to guidance from the state health department and take the needed precautions based on local conditions.”
