Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Teachinghistory.org is designed to help K-12 history teachers access resources and materials to improve U.S. History education in the classroom. In addition to online resources, the site offers a free print newsletter, History Education News, as well as e-newsletters and a classroom poster on historical thinking skills.

E-map exploring

National Geographic Xpeditions offers a wide variety of free, printable maps, as well as lesson plans and other related activities at its website. Go to www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/atlas/.

Love those veggies

The Canned Vegetable Council has lesson plans, coloring sheets and other materials at www.cannedveggies.org/learnmore/educators/educators.htm. Lesson plans range from "Edible Vegetable Mysteries" to "What's on a Label?"

For weather watchers

Download a free Atlantic Hurricane Tracking Map from the National Weather Service. At www.nws.noaa.gov/om/brochures.shtml, the NWS offers a variety of maps and other publications, including Owlie Skywarn — Watch Out, Storms Ahead! The weather booklet covers tornadoes, lightning, floods, winter storms and hurricanes. Sections include fun facts, quizzes and pages to color.

Presidential poster

C-SPAN's American Presidents Timeline poster is available free to C-SPAN Classroom members. The six-foot-long poster details the lives and public service careers of every president, plus key historical events, Supreme Court cases and technology milestones throughout 280 years of presidential history.
