Miriam "Mimi" Diamond | Aug. 19, 2012
United Federation of Teachers

Miriam ("Mimi") Diamond of Glendale, New York, taught in the New York City public schools for 45 years, first as a high school Social Studies teacher from 1958-1983, and then as a high school guidance counselor from 1983-2003, when she retired at the age of 68.

Over the years, Miriam worked at several schools, including Far Rockaway High School, Forest Hills High School, Murray Bergtraum High School, and Newtown High School. She was a proud and active member of the United Federation of Teachers for several decades.

Miriam was a lifelong learner. She earned her MA in Social Studies Education from NYU in 1964, and also held a MS in Guidance from Queens College. In addition, she had a post-Master's Advanced Certificate in Marriage and Family Counseling, also from Queens College, and she received a Fulbright grant in 1976 for study in India.

In addition to her teaching, Miriam had a private practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist from 1987 onwards. She enjoyed traveling and made trips to Europe, China, Israel, India and the Galapagos Islands. She was an enthusiastic New Yorker, loved the city's diverse food culture and frequently attended the opera, ballet, theatre and museums. A long-time dog lover, she cherished several dogs over the years. She enjoyed nature and walking, bird watching, and socializing with friends at her summer home on a lake.

Miriam died peacefully after a two-year battle with a rare cancer, falling ill with an infection while on vacation with her family. She is survived by Bernard Diamond, her husband of 54 years; her daughters Ilene Diamond of San Francisco, Lori Diamond of New York City, and Rena Diamond of Atlanta. She is also survived by her sons-in-law Craig Ross and Nick Wilding, as well as four grandchildren.
