Paul Friedman, 80, died Feb. 22 in Brooklyn. A former English teacher at New Utrecht HS in Brooklyn, Paul was a lover of jazz, literature and movies and believed in education through the arts. Paul was predeceased by his parents Moe and Bertha Friedman, his brother Howard and his sister Barbara Silverman. He is survived by his brother Bernard, sister-in-law Renee, nieces, nephews, and their families.

Leo Kiely was born in 1924 and grew up in Central New York. He finished his undergraduate degree at Villanova after his naval service in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After receiving a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, he taught Mathematics in Stockbridge Valley and Hamilton Central Schools for 33 years.

He was active in the old New York State Teachers' Association and was lead negotiator for several teachers' contracts. Leo was well known for his expertise regarding health insurance issues. After his 1981 retirement, he tutored in the Hamilton schools for another 24 years. He was a charter member of the Hamilton Central School Hall of Honor and was very proud to have had one of the hallways in Hamilton named "Kiely Way" in his honor. He is survived by five children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Thelma Ward, 98, a former teacher and guidance counselor, died Oct. 30, 2015. She was a counselor and teacher for more than 40 years at PS 61 in the Bronx before her retirement in 1982. She lived in Florida at the time of her death.
