June is LGBTQ Pride Month

NYSUT last fall released two inaugural posters honoring pivotal figures in LGBTQ history:Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month is celebrated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.

Bayard Rustin (1912 — 1987), an openly gay man, began advocating for gay and lesbian causes later in life, working to bring the AIDS crisis to the attention of the NAACP.

Laverne Cox is an American actress and LGBTQ advocate best known for her portrayal of Sophia Burset on the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black." Cox is the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a primetime Emmy award for acting.
