Congratulations on reaching retirement and welcome to the ranks of NYSUT retirees. As a retiree member, you have available to you an array of services and benefits, including prepaid retiree membership; access to publications, programs and consultants focused on helping to meet your needs; not to mention logistical support for political action and networking opportunities with your more than 190,000 fellow retirees.
Now more than ever, we need you to stay engaged and stay informed about the issues impacting our professions and our members - retired and in-service. The attacks on public employees, collective bargaining and the very benefits prior generations of retirees helped to secure require constant vigilance and action. The new Tier 6 pension level, for example, not only impacts future retirees, but threatens the stability of defined benefit plans for current members and retirees, including those enrolled in the state's optional retirement plans. Your activism is our best offense against these threats.
We make it easy for you to be involved. This handbook gives you everything you need to know about being a NYSUT retiree, including answers to your most frequently asked questions. Let it help you find ways to stay connected with the union and your fellow retirees.
NYSUT retirees are needed to write letters, participate in phone banks, do grassroots lobbying locally, and to continue to advocate on our issues in Albany and Washington, D.C. Our network of 45 retiree councils helps address your needs and concerns at the local level. Statewide, you're represented by three Election District Directors and an At Large Director on the NYSUT Board of Trustees. Additionally, retirees from the state Teachers' Retirement System have a NYSUT retiree representative on the TRS Board of Directors.
Again, congratulations on reaching this career milestone. Don't let it be an ending, but rather a new chapter in your union involvement and activism.
