NYSUT Health Care Professionals Council offers healthy lifestyles program for kids

File photo: NYSUT President Richard Iannuzzi introduces the 24-7 Let's Go healthy lifestyles program to students in Genevieve Stinson's first grade class at School 14 in Troy. Thousands of students in public schools across the state are participating in the program developed by NYSUT's Health Care Professionals Council.
24/7 Let's Go! is a program developed by the NYSUT Health Care Professionals Council to encourage schoolchildren to get off the couch, away from their video games and into healthy lifestyles.
The goal is to get young students to take 7 positive steps a day, and track their progress by earning stickers to be placed on an Action Chart. The chart has a list of 24 ideas for 24/7 Let's Go!
Classrooms without official stickers may participate by downloading and printing the Action Chart. Students can mark their charts with a pen or pencil: "A" for physical activity and "HF" for happy, healthy food consumption.
The 24/7 Let's Go web site is a resource for:
- students;
- parents;
- educators, health care professionals, and others who work with children.
This year, the American Cancer Society has endorsed the program. Obesity increases the risk of several types of cancer and ACS leaders are concerned that the proportion of children ages 6-19 who are overweight has tripled in the last three decades. The society encourages educators and parents alike to get kids active, eating right and on the road to a healthier life.
